about

There’s a giant sculpture by Alexander Calder in front of the art museum here in Nagoya. He’s famous for making these simple, abstract shapes that drift around in space and time depending on the wind. Most works inside the museum are set and finished pieces. But if you see his, it’s moving - as though it comes to life with just a breath of wind and a bit of time.
I wanted to make a song that also only had a few simple elements, but make them feel as though they’re floating around. It was a good chance to use tape loops and a cymbal on a turntable - to see sounds spinning in real life.
I also couldn’t get the idea of how time and elements affect the shape of things out of my head - statues getting softer with the wind, bodies getting softer middle sections from sitting in studio chairs… So I tried to find a way to make the sounds in the first half get softer as the song goes on.
There is a way of playing with sounds called granular synthesis that lets you move around the waveform of anything you’ve recorded. You can scroll through time at any speed and in any direction you want.
I used this granular synthesis technique on the simple guitar notes from the beginning of the song to get the drifting, unfolding sounds in the middle. I wanted to make it feel like time was stretching out. As somebody who tries to do too many projects all at once all the time, the chance to stretch out time a little bit sounds like the best thing ever.

Alexander Calder
