We’ve made a lot of songs about rain… But every year the rainy season comes here and makes it hard to go outside and do anything. It’s always when I’m stuck inside that I manage to write the most songs.
People tend to ask a lot about inspiration and where ideas come from when you’ve made a ton of albums. If I’m being honest, the answer is mainly just deadlines and days when you can’t go outside.
The second machine I ever learned to record songs on was a cassette multitrack recorder. I saved up all of my money to buy a used one when I was 17. This was before I even owned a computer. I was so excited to be able to record (and mix!) songs on my own. I sat myself in a room for a whole month figuring out how to use it - and then how to use it the wrong way to get interesting effects.
I had to sell that machine for money to move to Japan. But recently I found a similar one on a cheap auction site here. I spent a lot of time this rainy season locked inside remembering how to use it. That’s how this song came about. Recording on tape is much slower than recording on a computer. After every take you have to wait around for the cassette to rewind back to the beginning. But as someone always in a hurry to get ideas out of my head, I kind of liked the way it slowed me down and made me more forgiving of imperfect takes.
One thing I learned from trying to record the songs in different ways for this album is that the medium you use doesn’t just change the tone and texture. It also changes the process. And sometimes that changes more about how something sounds than any type of EQs and compressors ever could.
Maybe time, setting, and circumstance are the best guitar pedals ever…
雨についての曲は今まで山ほど作った。。。 でも毎年梅雨が来ると、外に出る気も無くなってしまう。室内にこもりがちになる時が、曲作りがいちばん捗る時だ。
アルバムをたくさんリリースしているので、どうやってインスピレーションやアイディアを得るのかよく聞かれる。正直に言うと、差し迫る締切と家に閉じこもる日々が最も効果的だ。
レコーディングのために手に入れた２台目の機材は、カセットのマルチトラックだった。17才の時で、コツコツと貯金して買った。まだコンピューターも持っていない時で、自分で録音できる（ミックスも！）ようになってすごく嬉しかった。１ヶ月まるまるかけて、使い方を覚えた。かっこいいエフェクトがかかるように正しくない使い方まで。
日本に来るときに、引越し代の足しにするために売ってしまったけれど、最近似た物をオークションで安く手に入れた。今年の梅雨はスタジオにこもって、これをどうやって使うか思い出そうとしていた。そこからこの曲ができた。カセットに録音するのは、コンピューターを使うよりも時間がかかる。テイク毎にカセットが巻き戻るのを待っていなきゃいけない。失敗テイクがあっても、気を落ち着ける時間ができていい感じだった。
このアルバムで色々なレコーディング法を試したけれど、手段は音色や質感を変えるだけでは無い。その過程も変える。EQやコンプレッションよりも曲に大きな影響を与えることもある。
時に時間、セッティング、状況は、いちばん最高なギターペダルだ。
