The sound of fingers sliding along guitar strings always reminds me of breath - like the instrument is trying to gulp a bit of space between plucks, the way a singer might catch a bit of air between words.
Sitting on the sofa, our daughter reading a book by my side, this song very quietly tumbled out of my hands late one night. I noticed the sound of my fingers sliding between chords changing the way I breathed - long inhales on the first chord and long exhales on the second.
Before long, I noticed the book on our daughter’s chest rising and falling in the same pattern as the chords. And moments later… She was fast asleep! The true sign of any successful Lullatone song.
Years ago I got hired by a big meditation app to do some sound explorations for them. To be honest, I don’t really meditate or anything. I make a lot of songs and I feel like I lose my sense of time and self enough just doing that. I heard it is really good for other people though... Maybe I should try it…
Anyway, one of the ideas I proposed was to make these round, blossoming tones out of the host’s breath. I used his inhales and exhales to trigger a vocoder that was playing simple synth sounds. It felt soft and airy - and really unique compared to stereotypical healing bell tones.
In the end, we both agreed that their app experience was probably better without sound effects, but I still couldn’t get this technique out of my mind.
It finally found a home in this song. Very quietly in the background, the frequency of my breath is controlling a pitched reverb effect on the guitar. It’s so subtle, but felt like the final glue that bound this whole album together. Instead of a grand finale, we slowly fade away - buried in a blanket of textures - a collection of shapes and stories, just taking a breath as time spins by.

夜遅くソファーに座り、横には娘が本を読んでいる。その時このメロディーが静かに生まれた。コードが変わる度に、自分の呼吸がつられて動くのに気がついた。1つ目のコードは長く吸って、2つ目は長く吐く。
少しすると娘が本を持ったまま、同じ呼吸をしているのに気づいた。
そして。。。そのうち寝てしまった！Lullatoneの曲の究極の成功。
何年か前に、有名な瞑想アプリのサウンドデザインを作る依頼を受けた。瞑想はしたことがないけど、曲作りに没頭して、時間を忘れてしまう事はよくある。瞑想はたくさんの人に良い効果があると聞くので、試してみてもいいかも。
僕が提案したのは、ホストの呼吸を使って音を作る事だった。彼の吸って吐く音をヴォコーダーに取り入れて、シンプルなシンセサイザーの音で鳴らした。柔らかくてふわっとした音ができた。定番の鐘の音よりユニークなものになった。
最終的にこのアプリにはサウンドエフェクトが無い方がいい、とお互いに同意したけど、このテクニックを忘れられなかった。
それをやっとこの曲で使うことができた。背景にすごく小さな音で、僕の呼吸の振動がギターのリバーブエフェクトを操作している。とても小さいけれど、このアルバムに一体感を織りなす最後の仕上げになった。
グランドフィナーレの代わりに、僕らはゆっくりとだんだん消えていく。
