Another Lullatone song about rain… Who could have ever guessed…
Seriously though, I guess we do come back to this theme of being stuck inside quite a bit. There are lots of things that can make it hard to go out, but rain feels like a pretty universal one. And it was storming every single day when I wrote this one - a kind of mark of the changing of the seasons here.
People often think of bossa nova as a light summery affair. But a lot of the older tracks have layers of sadness and longing in them. I wanted to make a song that felt melancholy - not for a love, but for a season that was going away.
The drone-like tones in the background are from a handmade steel tongue drum called the Sazanami drum from Wakayama, Japan. It is really quiet in the mix but added just the feeling I wanted in the background. Steel drums are usually thought of as summery and tropical too. But the drawn-out sustain on this one gave it just the kind of longing sound I was looking for.
I recorded the guitar on an old cassette deck that came with Reader’s Digest magazine in the 1960s here (around the same time as my favorite bossa records). I just bought it because I liked the color, but it ended up having my favorite tone of any machine ever.
Sometimes how an instrument looks and feels is just as important to me as how it sounds. If something looks nice, you are more likely to leave it out. The more you see it, the more you’ll play it. And if it feels good in your hands, you won’t want to put it down. There are already so many things competing for our attention. I just want to give instruments every advantage I can.
またLullatoneの雨の歌。。。誰が予想した。。。？家から出るのが億劫になる理由はたくさんあるけれど、雨はユニバーサルに出不精を誘発させるみたい。この曲を作った時は毎日嵐がやってきていた。日本では夏から秋に変わってゆくサインだ。
ボサノバは夏っぽいと思われているけど、古いトラックを聞くと哀愁や切望が感じられる。そんなメランコリックな曲を作りたいと思った。愛ではなくて、過ぎてゆく季節を悲しむような。
バックグランドに聞こえるドローンっぽい音は、和歌山で作られているさざなみドラムと言うスティールタンドラムで作った。とても小さい音だけど、フィーリングを出すために背景に使った。スティールドラムは夏っぽくてトロピカルだと思われているけど、サステインをかけて音が伸びていくようにした事で、求めていた切なさや悲しむ感じが出せたと思う。
1960年代に日本で発売された、リーダーズダイジェストの付録についていたカセットデッキでギターをワンテイクで録音した。色が気に入って買ったけど、どの機材よりも一番気に入った音が出せるので、すごくたくさんの曲で使った。
僕にとって楽器の見た目や手に持った感じは、それが出す音と同じ位大切だ。見ただけで幸せな気分になる楽器は飾って置いてあるし、そうすると手にする機会も増える。感触が良い楽器はずっと持っていたくて、演奏する時間も長くなる。自分が好きな物に囲まれて、楽器と共に過ごす時間を増やしていきたい。
