A kotatsu is a low Japanese heated table. It’s a staple in most homes here - and both a blessing and a curse.
On one hand, it is the coziest place you’ll ever be. Imagine slipping into a sandwich of heat on a cold day. On the other hand, it is a total trap. Slide in for a second on an afternoon and you’ll soon find yourself fast asleep - an unplanned nap coaxed out by the warmth under the table’s thick blanket.
I’ve fallen asleep while listening to records in there so many times - only to wake up an hour or so later with the turntable’s needle looping over and over the very end of the vinyl. That’s what inspired the drums in this song.
So I recorded a ton of pops and cracks from the end of records and sequenced them into a beat with a drum machine. If you carve shapes into the vinyl with a knife, you can even create various kinds of pops.
All of the hiss and crackles in a record kind of sounds like a fire, right? I think, subconsciously, that is why people think vinyl sounds “warm.”
I also set a snare drum to spin in circles on top of a turntable and let a brush drag across its head - a new way of literally looping drums!
Laying in the kotatsu, listening to a recording of the drums, the guitar part came to me one afternoon in our living room. I was already asleep by the time I figured out all the chords.
I wonder who really wrote the song: the kotatsu or me?
こたつは日本のヒーター付きローテーブルだ。ほとんどの家庭にあるこの必需品は、ありがたいものであると同時に災いをもたらすものでもある。
暖かくて居心地の良い最高の場所であるこたつは、もう一方で罠でもある。すごく寒い午後に少しでも足を滑り込ませたら、一瞬で寝てしまう。暖かいこたつ布団に包まれて、予定に無い昼寝のはじまり。
レコードを聴きながら、こたつで寝てしまった事は何回もあり、１時間くらい後に目が覚めるとターンテーブルの針が、レコードの終わりの方を何回も繰り返している。それがこの曲のドラム部分になった。
レコードの終わりの部分の、ぷつっといった音やかすれた音を録音して、ドラムマシンでビートを作った。曲のイントロ部分に1つ目のループが入っている。
レコードの”シュー”といったヒスノイズは、火のようにも聞こえる。それでレコードで流す音楽を暖かく感じる人が多いような気がする。
ある日の午後、リビングのこたつで横になりながらギターを弾いていたら、この曲のメロディーを思いついた。コードチェンジをどうしようと考えていたら、やっぱりまた寝てた。
