This little melody is one of my favorite pieces to play when warming up on guitar. I was really interested in listening to études and wanted to try making something simple that only uses the top three strings.
When we all got stuck inside for a bit, I got really into playing guitar at home. I didn’t get any better at playing, but I started doing it the most in my life so far.
We have a guitar hanging by the door in our house. Anytime I had a few extra minutes to kill I’d noticed my fingers noodling out this track. So I tried recording it just like that - a little song to play when you are waiting around.
But I soon realized that almost every other song on this record has a guitar already… I really wanted to make an album that people could listen to all the way through. But whenever this one came on, I could feel my ears giving up like “not more of this…” So I decided to give it a try on the piano.
This recording is actually just a voice memo from my phone - of testing out how to play it. But, something about it felt just right. Voice memos are like the modern day demo tapes.
We have a clock in the same room as our piano that is kind of noisy. I didn’t notice it when I was playing, but listening back to the recording the clock’s sound is in the background, tick-ing and tock-ing relentlessly - totally unaware and unrelated to what is happening in the music.
Isn’t that kind of a metaphor for life though? Anytime we lose ourselves in playing something, worrying about something, or even not doing anything at all… time just keeps on marching ahead - unfazed by all of our little activities.
No matter how busy or bored we make ourselves - all we’re doing, really, is just spending a little time.
この小さなメロディーは、ギターのウォーミングアップをする時に好んで弾いてるものだ。この曲を作った頃練習曲をよく聞いていて、ギターの上3本の弦だけを使ってシンプルなものを作りたいと思っていた。
一日中家で過ごさなくてはいけなかった頃、いつもギターを弾いていた。そんなに上達はしなかったけど、今までの人生の中でいちばんギターを弾いた。
玄関のすぐそばにある壁にギターをかけてある。ほんの少し時間があると、このメロディーを弾いている事に気づいた。そこでそのままレコーディングしてみようと思った。待ち時間があったら弾く小さな曲。
でもその直後に、このアルバムにギターを使った曲がすでにたくさんあると気づいた。みんなが最後まで聴けるアルバムにしたかったのに、この曲が流れると”もういいや。。。”と耳が飽きてしまう感じがした。そこでピアノで試してみようと思った。
このレコーディングは、弾き方を忘れないためにデモで携帯のボイスメモに録音したものだけど、何だかこれだ！という感じがした。ボイスメモは現代のデモテープなのかもしれない。
ピアノと同じ部屋に壁時計があって、結構音が大きい。録音している時は気づかなかったけど、背景にチクタクと絶え間なく時計の秒針の音が聞こえる。
まるで人生のメタファーのようだ。 何かに没頭していたり、考え事をしていたり、何にもしてない時だって、時間はひとりでに過ぎ去ってしまう。
どんなに忙しくても、はたまた暇すぎても、僕らはみんな時間を過ごしている事に変わりはない。
