Around the time we were making this record “felt piano” was a really popular sound among certain types of musicians. I’m not gonna lie, I love the soft tones of muting the piano’s strings with felt too! But as it always goes, in both a literal and metaphorical sense, the seasons were changing - and the felt piano was falling out of fashion.
Autumn was in the air and the wardrobes were changing, too. I looked down at my pants and an idea hit me! Wouldn’t it be funny if someone made a corduroy piano? That way we could still have soft muted tones and, let’s be honest, corduroy is already the most musical fabric of all anyway.
The piano in our house was Yoshimi’s mom’s when she was little. Our daughter uses it every day to practice for recitals lately. I think it has a kind of family history deep down in its wood now, and I didn’t want to break it by exploring such a silly idea.
Nevertheless, I wrote this little song as an idea of the first melody I’d like to play if we ever did make a piano with a corduroy dampener.
このアルバムを作っている時、ミュージシャンの間で”フェルトピアノ”の音がとても人気があった。正直に言うと、僕もピアノの弦がフェルトで叩かれるやわらかい音がとても好きだ。けれど大抵の事がそうであるように、季節は移り変わってフェルトピアノの流行は終わってしまった。
秋が始まりつつあり衣替えの季節がやって来た。自分のズボンを見て思いついた。
”コーデュロイピアノって面白いんじゃない？” 柔らかい雰囲気も出るし、コーデュロイは生地の中でいちばん音楽的だから。
我が家にあるピアノはよしみのお母さんが小さい頃に買ってもらったもので、今は僕たちの娘が毎日ピアノの練習をしている。家族の歴史があるので、変な実験をしてピアノを壊したくなく諦めた。
いつの日かコーデュロイピアノを作ったら、いちばん最初に弾こうと思ってこの曲を作った。
