When I was little we had a stereo that had two cassette decks at home. I fell in love with music while listening to tapes on it in my room. One teenage summer, cooped up in my bedroom after a band break-up, I taught myself how to record my own songs alone on it. I made this track with that same technique.
Here’s how it works: First you record an instrument onto Tape 1. Then you rewind it and play it back while playing your next instrument and recording it together at the same time with the Tape 1 onto Tape 2 - it’s a chance to duet with yourself, but there’s no undo button, and no remixing the balance later…
You can keep going and going until you have as many layers as you’d like. But with each new layer, the things you recorded at first get more muffled and farther away sounding - as if they are fading away.
To me, these sounds are kind of like memories. The oldest ones are still there in the background - shaping everything that comes after them. Even if they aren’t clear on their own anymore, they set the foundation for what falls on top.
I kind of like when things get foggy like that. As we get older, sometimes old memories aren’t quite as clear as they used to be. But distant memories of things can be even better than they were in real life. I know that must be the case with all of the songs I made when I was young…
When I moved to Japan, I gave all of my tapes to a thrift store so someone else could tape over them and record their own melodies. I’m sure my old songs weren’t really very good anyway. Luckily, I don’t have them to know!
小さい頃、カセットテープが２つ入るステレオが家にあった。ひと夏の間自分の部屋に閉じこもって、１つの曲をこのカセットテープデッキで録音した。このトラックをあの時と同じ方法でレコーディングした。
どうやって録音したかと言うと：はじめにTape 1に1つ目の楽器を録音する。その録音したものを巻き戻して再生する。Tape 1を再生中に、次の楽器を演奏してTape 2へ一緒に録音する。
好きなだけ繰り返してレイヤーを足すことができるけど、レイヤーを足す毎にはじめに録音したものは段々と小さく遠くにあるように聞こえてくる。まるで音が消えていってしまうように。僕にとって音は思い出の様なものだ。一番古いものはもうピンボケしているけれど、新しく追加されていくものを支えるように背景としてまだそこにある。
そんな感じのぼんやりしたものが好きだ。ほとんどの場合、思い出は現実にあった事よりも良いものだから。僕が若い頃作った曲も、僕の記憶の中では大分良いものに描き変わっている。
日本に来た時、持っていたテープを全部寄付した。他の誰かが思い出を録音できるように。テープに残っていた僕が作った音楽は、そんなに良いものじゃなかったと思う。もう手元に無くてよかった！
